MAYOR BROWN FILES OVER 21,000 DEMOCRATIC SIGNATURES FOR RE-ELECTION; TEN TIMES AMOUNT NEEDED

Mayor Also Files Petitions for Independence, Conservative and Working Families Parties

BUFFALO – Mayor Byron W. Brown today filed 21,070 Democratic signatures for re-election as Mayor of the City of Buffalo with the Erie County Board of Elections. The mayor submitted 19,070 more signatures - or 953% - than what is required by State Election Law. In addition, Mayor Brown filed levels of signatures much higher than what is required as the endorsed Independence, Conservative and Working Families candidate. The Democratic signatures filed by Mayor Brown today exceeded the Democratic signatures he filed in 2005 by 3,605.

“These signatures, coming from every section of Buffalo, demonstrate my campaign’s broad base of support and I’m deeply honored by this overwhelming support of my candidacy for re-election as Mayor of Buffalo,” said Mayor Brown. “My Administration has made great progress over the past 3 ½ years – reducing crime, returning the city to fiscal health and strengthening the efficient delivery of city services – but there is more work ahead of us as we continue our drive to make Buffalo stronger, safer and smarter. We have reduced property taxes every year, held the line on service fees and began a comprehensive reevaluation of the city’s property assessment process, which will make that system fairer and more logical for all property owners.”

In addition to filing the significant number of Democratic signatures, Mayor Brown submitted 576 Independence Party signatures, 176% more than required; 201 Conservative Party signatures, 219% more than required; and 107 Working Families Party signatures; 143% more than required.

“I thank all of the city residents who showed confidence in me by signing these nominating petitions,” said Mayor Brown. “Since becoming Mayor, I have spoken with tens of thousands of our city’s residents, visited their neighborhoods, celebrated their civic achievements, listened to their concerns, comforted them in hospitals and at funerals, and remained true to my commitment of making Buffalo a better place to live, work, invest in and raise a family. I am convinced that the progress we have achieved so far will continue to gain momentum and will lead to an even brighter future for all Buffalonians.”

To date, Mayor Brown has received the endorsement of AFSCME Local 650, Boilermakers Local # 7, the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 14, the Buffalo Building & Construction Trades Council, the Western New York Chapter of the Working Families Party, the Erie County Independence Party, the Erie County Conservative Party, the Western New York Hispanic & Friends Association, the Buffalo Educational Support Team and Goin’ South, the largest civic, social, cultural and charitable organization in South Buffalo.
